Kristin Lewis's 60 Mile Journey for Breast Cancer

“A woman’s chance of having breast cancer during her lifetime is one in eight. Your chance of knowing this woman is almost 100%”

In 1993, when I was 12, my mother passed away due to metasticized breast cancer. In her memory my sister Beth and I will be walking 60 miles in 3 days to raise money for the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade.

My mother was only a young woman, in her late 30's when she discovered she had breast cancer. If she had known more about self breast examinations and early detection in her 20's she might have been able to catch the cancer a little early and increased her chances of survival significantly.

This is why Avon's Breast Cancer 3-day walk is so important to me! One of the focuses of the money raised is to help raise awareness about early detection, particularly for women in underserved areas. This includes programs to educate, provide free mammograms, and to provide financial aid for families. If this can prevent one more 12 year old girl from having to give her mommy a final hug, every mile will have been worth it.

If you would like to help me reach my initial fundraising goal of $1900 so I can walk 60 miles with my sister from Boca Raton to Miami, FL, please go to www.bethepeople.com, (1) choose 'Make an online donation' at the bottom of the page (2) Choose 'Avon Breast Cancer 3-day, Florida - 2002' under please select an event (3) Enter my walker #3685. Or search for me by name, Kristin Lewis. (4) Fill out your personal and credit card info. You can also call (800) 825-1000 to make a donation over the phone.
